FAQ's

Is this backed by science?
Yes - Boston University (Wise et al., 2011) tracked over 2,200 men. Those bicycling more than five hours a week were roughly twice as likely to have low sperm concentration and low motility compared to men who did no regular exercise.

Is the cooling pouch comfortable during rides?
Yes - we cycle and one of us has completed an Ironman 70.3 and is training towards a full. This sleek, minimal design has been formulated with cyclists in mind and tried and tested on one of our founders during those brutally long rides.

How do I use these?
Pop them into your WattsBelow boxer pouch, close the zip, kit on, clip in, ride.

Will they feel too cold?
Nope - the pack is designed for cooling and not freezing and are placed in a pouch to avoid any skin shock - cool in the fridge, use and then re-cool.

Can I use WattsBelow in the sauna?
Absolutely - many of our customers incorporate our boxers into their sauna routine specifically to support temperature regulation while enjoying the cardiovascular and wellbeing benefits sauna has to offer.

You've chased all the marginal gains but ignored the loss you're sitting on.

You've chased every watt. Carbon wheels, aero helmet, a position dialled in over a winter of turbo sessions. All for gains measured in single percentages.

But there's one you've been sitting on -literally.

Your testes are designed to run a few degrees cooler than the rest of you. Hours in the saddle, pressed against a hot perineum with nowhere for the heat to go, push the temperature in exactly the wrong direction.

And the research backs it up:

Boston University (Wise et al., 2011) tracked over 2,200 men. Those bicycling more than five hours a week were roughly twice as likely to have low sperm concentration and low motility compared to men who did no regular exercise.

Intense endurance training (Tartibian & Maleki, 2015) found that male cyclists undergoing 16 weeks of intensive training showed significant drops in sperm concentration, motility and volume - with researchers pointing to oxidative stress as a key factor.

The picture is consistent.

And that's not us demonising the bike. We ride, and we wouldn't give it up for anything. It's just heat - and heat is a variable, which means it's one you can manage.

WattsBelow boxers are built for exactly that. A natural cotton body and a cooling system designed to support healthy scrotal temperature through the longest rides. No bulky ice packs - just a small cooling pouch designed to sit discreetly under your guys. The cooling boxers built for the saddle.

Kit up, clip in, ride.

Time to get those watts up, lads.

Don't just take our word for it...

Honestly bought these half for the health angle and half out of curiosity. What I didn't expect was how much better they feel than anything else I've worn. The fit is proper, comfortable and can happily wear daily. Peace of mind on the health angle also, bought a few pairs, thanks lads!

Adrian

I ride a lot and also enjoy the sauna so these were a no-brainer. Good quality pair of boxers with an efficient zip pouch, slim cooling pack which you don't feel.

Suhrud

I'm 31, no kids planned yet, but I take my health seriously. I'm into a lot of endurance/ ultra endurance stuff - take these with me now on every training session.

Ben

One of those products you're not sure why it didn't exist before. Can't notice the pouch during rides and I just whack the cooling pouch in the fridge between each. Good stuff.

FAQ's

Is this backed by science?

Yes and we're upfront that we build on published research rather than making claims about our own product.

The link between heat and male reproductive health is well established. The testes sit outside the body specifically because sperm production needs a temperature a few degrees below your bodies core. From there, the research is consistent: a Boston University study of over 2,200 men found those cycling more than five hours a week were roughly twice as likely to have low sperm concentration and motility compared to men who did no regular exercise. Biohacker Bryan Johnson documented a 54% drop in his own motile sperm count from sauna sessions without scrotal cooling and a full recovery once cooling was reintroduced.

The common thread is heat. And heat is a variable you can manage.

That's the principle WattsBelow is designed around: natural materials and a cooling system built to support healthy scrotal temperature during the moments heat builds up most with us (assuming you cycle like we do, which is why you're here!)

The science on temperature is clear, the mechanism is simple, and managing it is one of the most straightforward changes a cyclist can make.

Read the studies yourself:

Wise LA, et al. "Physical activity and semen quality among men attending an infertility clinic." Fertility and Sterility, 2011;95(3):1025–1030.

Jung & Schuppe, on sitting position and scrotal temperature, 2007.

Are they comfortable during rides and long rides?

Yes - these have been designed for exactly that purpose. We use them ourselves during rides, our founder is training for an Ironman and uses them - they're cyclist made, tried and tested. The cooling pouch is intentionally small and slim with the cotton body of the boxers providing a soft and comfortable barrier.

What are they made of?

WattsBelow Cooling Boxers are 95% natural cotton, 5% elastane.

The cotton does the heavy lifting - no microplastics, no synthetic fibres, nothing associated with the heat retention or hormonal disruption linked to conventional synthetic fabrics. The 5% elastane is there purely for fit, stretch and longevity of the boxer, and while we won't pretend it isn't present, it's a fraction of what you'll find in conventional underwear or cycling clothes

The average polyester boxer brief is 80-100% synthetic. The average cycling short is 100% synthetic. WattsBelow is 95% natural.

How long until I notice a difference?

Sperm take approximately 74 days to fully mature - that's biology, not a limitation of the product. This means any meaningful change in sperm quality takes roughly 10-12 weeks to show up in a semen analysis. For best results, we recommend consistent wear on all of your rides.

Do they work if I'm not actively trying for a baby?

This is the question we get most and the honest answer is that most WattsBelow customers aren't trying to conceive right now. Sperm count and testosterone are linked to far more than fertility. Energy levels, mood, drive, physical performance these are all downstream of male reproductive health. The same conditions that reduce sperm count also suppress testosterone. If you train hard, take your health seriously, and want your biology working for you rather than against you, WattsBelow aren't a fertility product. They're a performance choice.
